OBJECTIVES AND CONTENTS

Objectives of the Course Unit: This course aims to enable students to analyse novels written in the Victorian period by putting under scrutiny the theoretical, political, social, and literary developments occurring in the 19th century.
Contents of the Course Unit: This course covers the analyses of the novels written in the Victorian Era by such authors as Dickens, Eliot, Hardy, and the The Brontës.

KEY LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT (On successful completion of this course unit, students/learners will or will be able to)

identify the economic, social, and political developments which played a significant part in the emergence of the Victorian novel as a literary genre.
discuss literary transitions from the Romantic to the Victorian period.
analyse a novel in terms of characters, setting, theme, plot, narrative etc. in an essay.
explain the major characteristics of realist and Victorian novels.
compare and contrast the novel genre with previous literary genres such as romance and epic.
