OBJECTIVES AND CONTENTS

Objectives of the Course Unit: The objective of this course is to provide the students with a comprehensive understanding of the role and activities of international economic organizations. The focus, therefore, is on the philosophy and principles of international economic organizations as well as issues that they try to deal. This course tries to examine the rationale of international economic organizations by dealing with the origins and the nature of them, as the introductory part of it.
Contents of the Course Unit: After discussing the idea of multilateralism, some functional and specialized institutions such as WHO, ILO, IBRD, IMF, and FAO will be explained. Also, after analyzing the aims and the failures of the League of Nations, the United Nations (UN) system will be investigated in detail. In this part, the genesis of the UN, the principles, structures and its operations will be discussed. Following the UN system, regionalism, as other significant part of the course, will focus on different parts of the world with their specific institutions, such as MERCOSUR, EU, NAFTA, ASEAN, ECOWAS, and the League of Arab States.
