OBJECTIVES AND CONTENTS

Objectives of the Course Unit: This course aims to familiarise students with the significant plays written in the 20th century and introduce the pivotal literary movements regarding the theatre.
Contents of the Course Unit: The course covers both British writers and significant European writers who influenced the continent in the 20th century.

KEY LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT (On successful completion of this course unit, students/learners will or will be able to)

outline the elements of drama such as plot and characterisation.
identify the influence of such literary movements as modernism and postmodernism on the plays written in the 20th century.
distinguish the specific features of each type of drama written in the 20th century in terms of form and content.
compare and contrast plays written in the 20th century in accordance with their literary, theoretical, social, and political background verbally or in an essay.
relate the playwright’s use of language, writing style, and narrative techniques to the developments occurring in literature in relation to the theoretical, literary, social, and political context of the 20th century verbally or in a research paper.
apply various literary theories to the analysis of plays.
