OBJECTIVES AND CONTENTS

Objectives of the Course Unit: Tell the similarities and differences between the two dominant theories in the study of nationalism. Apply the theoretical discussion in analyzing empirical developments around the world.
Contents of the Course Unit: Students are required to read the two dominant books in the study of natioalism and a recent cutting-edge work applying theoretical discussions to the cases of Turkey, Germany, Soviet Union, and post-Soviet Russia

KEY LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT (On successful completion of this course unit, students/learners will or will be able to)

Learn the two main theoretical approaches in the study of ethnicity and nationalism
Tell the differences and similarities between Anderson and Gellner theories of nationalism
Learn the three ethnicity regimes in the literature
Apply the theoretical knowledge in the empirical cases of Germany, Turkey, and post-Soviet Russia
