Aim of the Program

Purposes of the Department

Civil engineering is one of the oldest and most fundamental engineering disciplines, having played a pivotal role in the advancement of civilisations from antiquity to the present day. Today, the profession extends well beyond the construction of physical structures; it seeks to develop projects that enhance people's quality of life by integrating technology, sustainability and innovative solutions.

The planning, design, construction and supervision of the structures that form an indispensable part of daily life—ranging from residential buildings and hospitals to bridges and dams, from airports and harbours to transportation networks and water infrastructure systems—fall within the responsibility of civil engineers. In line with this mission, the Department of Civil Engineering at Istanbul Gelişim University aims to educate engineers who can accurately analyse the needs of the age, closely follow scientific and technological developments, remain sensitive to the environment and society, adhere to ethical values, think analytically and work effectively within teams.

During the first year of their education, our students establish a solid foundation through core courses such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, geology and computer-aided engineering applications. From the second year onward, they take technical courses oriented towards the principal areas of expertise in civil engineering, including structural engineering, geotechnics, transportation, hydraulics and construction materials. Through project work, laboratory practice and internship opportunities, students combine their theoretical knowledge with authentic engineering applications, thereby gaining substantial professional experience prior to graduation.

Prepared on the basis of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) in accordance with the Bologna Process, our up-to-date curriculum supports our students in graduating with the knowledge and competencies required to compete at both national and international levels.

Target of the Program

Mission of the Department

Our mission is to educate engineers who combine sound theoretical knowledge with practical skill, closely follow scientific and technological developments, adhere to ethical values, think analytically and embrace lifelong learning.

Our department aims to equip its students with the competence to analyse, model and solve real-world problems through the effective application of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering principles. Through an educational approach supported by laboratory practice, project work, internship opportunities and collaboration with industry, we seek to enable our students to develop their professional knowledge and skills to a level that will allow them to serve successfully in public institutions, the private sector and international platforms.

Vision of the Department

To become a pioneering education and research department that is respected at both national and international levels in the field of civil engineering, with high scientific productivity and a capacity to develop innovative and sustainable solutions; and to shape the future of the sector and of society by educating engineers who possess analytical thinking skills, adhere to ethical values, have a developed sense of social responsibility, use technology effectively and are able to compete on a global scale.

Program Educational Objectives (PEOs)

According to the mission of Civil Engineering program, the following program educational objectives are career and professional accomplishments that our expected to be achieved by our graduates within a few years of their graduation:

1. Are able to develop or design safe, sustainable, economical and environmentally sound solutions for engineering problems either within the profession or through post-graduate research (1,2,6);

2. Grow professionally in their careers through continued development of technical, management, and oral and written communication skills; achievement of professional licensure; and assumption of roles of responsibility and leadership in professional service (4,7);

3. Achieve their professional aims ethically and with cultural competency within an environment characterized by the diverse needs of society and the profession (4,7);

4. Provide public and private sectors with professional and innovative solutions to civil engineering and interdisciplinary problems (3,4,5);

Student Outcomes (SOs)

Our BSc program in Civil Engineering strives to ensure that our students attain the following outcomes:

  1. An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
  2. An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.
  3. An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
  4. An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
  5. An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
  6. An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.
  7. An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.

Career Opportunities

Career Opportunities

Civil engineering signifies far more than the construction of structures. As a profession that designs living spaces, transportation networks and the cities of the future, it offers its graduates broad and dynamic career opportunities.

Graduates of the Department of Civil Engineering may take part in large-scale projects such as residential and high-rise building schemes, bridges, tunnels, airports, dams, motorways, railways, harbours and industrial facilities. They are able to shape their careers across numerous fields—including design, project management, site supervision, inspection, consultancy and research and development—within public institutions, the private sector, international firms, engineering and consultancy companies, and building inspection organisations.

With the rapid advancement of technology, new career opportunities are also emerging in rising fields such as sustainable structures, smart cities, earthquake engineering and digital design. By taking an active role in projects that enhance people's quality of life and add value to the future of society, civil engineers leave a lasting mark throughout their professional lives.

Future of the Department

Technological developments have paved the way for positive developments in the field of Civil Engineering, as in every field. Compared to previous years, more complex, environmentally friendly and sustainable projects and designs can be easily put into practice with the opportunities provided by technology. Due to the rapid population growth worldwide and the urbanization rates triggered by this situation, Civil Engineering will continue to be an engineering branch that supports and facilitates life with its infrastructure and superstructure elements in the future.

Who Should Choose

Civil Engineering Department may be a suitable choice for candidates who want to take part in the planning and design stages of various projects such as buildings, bridges, roads, railways, dams, ports, who are interested in risk analysis and building information modeling, who take environmental and sustainability issues into account, who can make fast and accurate decisions, who follow current developments in the field, and who have a high entrepreneurial and research spirit and want to improve these aspects.
