OBJECTIVES AND CONTENTS

Objectives of the Course Unit: This course aims to provide a background in the qualitative analysis of human language by introducing its subcomponents.
Contents of the Course Unit: Core areas to be covered in this course include phonetics and phonology (sound structure and patterns), morphology (word structure), syntax (sentence structure), and semantics (the meanings of words and expressions).

KEY LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT (On successful completion of this course unit, students/learners will or will be able to)

describe the main ideas of how the concept of language is defined in linguistics.
analyse and interpret linguistic data on spoken, written and animal language.
transcribe speech into IPA and classify sound systems.
describe and explain basic concepts within Morphology and its subcomponents in particular.
indicate Syntactic analysis for English sentences.
interpret how Semantic meaning in a text correlate with the Syntax.
separate basic concepts within Semantic and Pragmatics.
