Objectives and Contents

Objectives: The aim of this course is to introduce students to the machines, equipment, and materials used in orthopedic technology and to teach the working principles of these tools while providing fundamental practical skills used in the production of orthopedic prostheses and orthoses. Within the scope of the course, students are expected to recognize different material types such as metals, leather, textiles, and thermoplastics, gain knowledge about the components used in orthopedic device production, and perform plaster casting, model preparation, and modeling applications in accordance with occupational safety principles.
Content: This course introduces the machines and technological equipment used in orthopedic technology, including milling machines, grinding machines, vacuum machines, and compressors, along with their operating principles. The use of plate ovens, plaster drying ovens, and leatherworking and sewing machines is also explained. During the course, metal materials used in orthopedic technology, leather and textile materials, as well as auxiliary fastening elements such as Velcro, straps, rivets, and buckles are examined. In addition, materials such as plate cork, polyurethane foam, and filling materials, along with thermoplastics, resins, adhesives, and chemicals are discussed. Mechanical components used in orthosis and prosthesis production (joints, stirrups, side bars, feet, and adapters) are introduced. Furthermore, the properties of plaster powder and plaster bandages, plaster wrapping and casting techniques are covered, and positive plaster model preparation, modeling techniques, and rasping applications are practiced in the workshop environment.
