Objectives and Contents

Objectives: The aim of this course is to introduce students to the fundamental concepts of prosthetics, the historical development of prosthetic devices, and the causes of amputations. Within the scope of the course, students are expected to recognize lower and upper extremity amputation levels and become familiar with the basic components of prosthetic systems such as prosthetic feet, knee joints, and modular prosthetic parts. In addition, the course aims to provide knowledge about congenital anomalies, prosthetic applications used in such conditions, gait abnormalities observed in lower extremity prosthesis users, and to develop basic awareness of myoelectric prostheses and amputee rehabilitation.
Content: This course covers the introduction to prosthetics and its fundamental concepts, as well as the historical development of prosthetic devices. Causes of amputations and lower extremity amputation levels are explained, and prosthetic feet and modular prosthetic components are introduced. Transtibial and knee disarticulation prostheses, prosthetic knee joints, and hip disarticulation prostheses are also discussed. During the course, congenital anomalies and related prosthetic applications are examined, and gait abnormalities observed in individuals using lower extremity prostheses are evaluated. In addition, the history of upper extremity prostheses, causes of amputations, and upper extremity amputation levels are discussed. The components and parts of upper extremity prostheses are introduced, along with congenital limb deficiencies, myoelectric prosthetic systems, and amputee rehabilitation.
