Objectives and Contents

Objectives: International Law I course is a general introduction to international law. This course aims at informing international relations students about the formation and implementation of principles, norms and rules in the international arena for the maintenance of relations between world states. At the same time, understanding the sources of international law, determination of legal persons that are bounded by international law, and understanding potential outcomes of the implementation of these norms and sanctions available are included among the objectives of this course.
Content: Our course begins with the nature and definition of international law. It explains the differences of international law from domestic and EU law, its relations with domestic law and discusses sources of international law (treaties, customary law, general principles of law, juridical decisions and doctrine) from a multidimensional perspective. Additionally, topics that are covered include subjects of international law (personality, statehood and jurisdiction, recognition), immunities from jurisdiction, codification, state succession, international organisation, means and methods for the conduct of diplomatic relations, private law subjects, legal framework and judicial structure for the protection of human rights and state responsibility.
