OBJECTIVES AND CONTENTS

Objectives of the Course Unit: This course aims to develop advanced competence in the specialized vocabulary and central concepts of translation studies, with a focus on terminology that underpins translation theory and professional practice. Students will engage critically with key terms and apply them analytically to real translation tasks, corpora, and CAT-tool contexts. Through regular glossary building, contextual examples, and reflection activities, learners will connect abstract concepts to concrete translator decision-making processes. By the end of the course, students should be able to use discipline-specific terminology accurately and confidently in both written and spoken academic and professional settings.
Contents of the Course Unit: The course explores the Key Terms in Translation Studies core glossary, focusing on conceptual clarity and practical application across genres and modalities. Each week students analyze a set of terms, create definitions in their own words, and demonstrate usage in real-world translation examples. Later modules also engage with influential thinkers in translation studies to situate terminology within broader theoretical frameworks. Assignments, mini-projects, and presentations help integrate term knowledge with translator training and research skills.

By the end of this course, students will be able to define and use advanced translation terms correctly in academic and professional contexts. They will demonstrate an ability to analyze how terminology shapes translation strategies, quality evaluation, and research discourse. Students will also be capable of synthesizing theoretical concepts with practical translation decisions, using both written analysis and oral presentation skills. A completed professional glossary and final presentation on key thinkers will show mastery of disciplinary language.
