OBJECTIVES AND CONTENTS

Objectives of the Course Unit: The aim of this lesson is to give a general knowledge about drugs used for the treatment of mental disorders.
Contents of the Course Unit: This lesson includes principals of psychopharmacology, neurotransmitter systems, classification and the action mechanisms of drugs used for the treatment of mental disorders.

KEY LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT (On successful completion of this course unit, students/learners will or will be able to)

1. the student will be able to classify the groups of drugs used for different mental disorders. 2. the student will be able to define the mechanism of action of different drug groups. 3. the student will be able to tell at least some of the adverse effects of psychotrophic drugs. 4. the student will be able to tell if a person with a mental disorder needs pharmacological treatment in a given case example. 5. the student will be able to define neurotransmitters in the brain and their major role.
