OBJECTIVES AND CONTENTS

Objectives of the Course Unit: The aim of this course is to provide students with a basic understanding of Latin American politics, taking into account the historical framework and important issues of contemporary Latin American politics.
Contents of the Course Unit: The main topics of the course are an introduction to the general history of Latin America, the pre-colonial and colonial period. Alongside the political cornerstones of the Latin American political system such as nation-building processes, problems of democracy and military interventions, current social issues such as demographic changes, immigration, religion, military tradition and the drug trade are also covered. As a case study, some countries in Latin America will be examined.

Explains colonial history and its effects on contemporary Latin American society and politics.
Distinguishes the intricate nature of Latin America's broad political and economic challenges and achievements.
