OBJECTIVES AND CONTENTS

Objectives of the Course Unit: It is aimed to gain competences related to basic thermodynamic concepts, work, thermodynamic laws, cycles, engine cycles, power, efficiency expressions, combustion and theory of fuels.
Contents of the Course Unit: : Basic Concepts (System, Environment, Change of State, Cycle,) Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics, Heat and Work Transformations, Thermodynamic Properties of Pure Matter (Property Relations, PV, TS Diagrams), Thermodynamic Properties of Pure Matter (Property Relations, PV, TS Diagrams), Ideal Gas Equation and Phase Changes of Ideal Gases, 1st Law of Thermodynamics, 2nd Law of Thermodynamics, Engine Cycles, Comparison of Cycles, Work, Efficiency, Power, Engine Performance Characteristics of Internal Combustion Engines, Fuels, Physical and Chemical Properties, Physical Analysis of Combustion, Chemical Properties, Combustion in Spark Ignition Engines, Classification of Combustion Fuels in Compression Ignition Engines, Hydrocarbons, Alcohols and Derivatives, Classification of Combustion, Combustion Equations, After Combustion Products and Analysis, Fuel and Combustion Related Tables, Alternative Fuels and Combustion, Knock Caused by Combustion in Engines , Fuel Evaporation, Knock Strength.

KEY LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT (On successful completion of this course unit, students/learners will or will be able to)

To be able to make and convert temperature and heat calculations in different units, to understand and interpret the zeroth law of thermodynamics.
Manometer can calculate the static pressure of liquids in open and closed systems, calculates work, power, kinetic, potential and internal energy.
1st law of thermodynamics and pure matter, internal energy, liquid vapor etc. Makes calculations of subjects by using tables.
To be able to make and interpret simple calculations in ideal gases and later in the calculations and comments to be used in the engines course.
Calculates the efficiency of a machine with the 2nd law of thermodynamics and Carnot cycles.
