OBJECTIVES AND CONTENTS

Objectives of the Course Unit: It's aimed to gain knowledge, skills, and attitudes related to planning, implementing, and monitoring disease-specific medical nutrition therapy for acute and chronic diseases observed in infants and children, while taking into account individual, cultural, and socioeconomic differences, along with the etiology, clinical symptoms, and complications of these diseases.
Contents of the Course Unit: Etiology, diagnosis, and treatment methods of diseases, growth monitoring, clinical case follow-up, management of anorexic children, childhood obesity, metabolic syndrome, Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, kidney, liver, and pancreatic diseases, eating disorders, food allergies, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, and medical nutrition therapy in neurological diseases.

KEY LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT (On successful completion of this course unit, students/learners will or will be able to)

Analyzes the growth, development, and nutritional status of infants and children and prepares dietary treatment.
Purposes current dietary treatments used in the treatment of diseases seen in infancy and childhood.
Identifies acute and chronic diseases seen in infancy and childhood and computes energy and nutrient needs.
Infers how foods and nutrients can be used in disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
Follows the principles of enteral and parenteral nutrition in children and infants.
Applies appropriate nutritional strategies in managing children with poor appetite.
Identifies the causes of obesity and metabolic syndrome and follows medical nutrition principles when creating a nutritional program.
Follows medical nutrition principles when creating a nutritional program for Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes in children.
Follows medical nutrition principles when creating a nutritional program for kidney diseases.
Follows medical nutrition principles when creating a nutritional program for liver and pancreatic diseases.
Follows medical nutrition principles when creating a nutritional program for eating disorders.
Follows medical nutrition principles when creating a nutritional program for food allergies.
Follows medical nutrition principles when creating a nutritional program for children with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorders.
Follows medical nutrition principles when creating a nutritional program for neurological diseases.
Studies and compares special products used in dietary treatment.
Follows clinical and biochemical techniques used in determining food intake and analyzes the results.
Predicts drug-nutrient interactions and the effects of medications used in treatment.
Differentiates and reproduces medical nutrition therapy according to different eating habits, cultural backgrounds, and socioeconomic conditions.
