Objectives and Contents
Objectives: The aim of this course is to introduce students to the place of Köktürk (Old Turkic) within the historical development of the Turkish language, the historical conditions that preceded the Köktürk period, the characteristics of the Köktürk alphabet, the inscriptions of the Köktürk period, and scholarly studies conducted on these inscriptions. The course also aims to develop students' understanding of the phonetic and morphological features of Köktürk and their ability to read, linguistically analyze, and translate selected texts from Köktürk inscriptions into modern Turkish.
Content: The course includes the historical conditions that prepared the Köktürk Turkish period, the basic testaments of the Köktürk period, the Turkish runic script, the place of Köktürk in the history of the Turkish language, the phonetic and morphological characteristics of Köktürk and the reading and analysis of sample texts from three important monuments.
