Objectives and Contents

Objectives: The aim of this course is to provide students with a basic understanding of Latin American politics, taking into account the historical framework and important issues of contemporary Latin American politics.
Content: The main topics of the course are an introduction to the general history of Latin America, the pre-colonial and colonial period. Alongside the political cornerstones of the Latin American political system such as nation-building processes, problems of democracy and military interventions, current social issues such as demographic changes, immigration, religion, military tradition and the drug trade are also covered. As a case study, some countries in Latin America will be examined.
