OBJECTIVES AND CONTENTS

Objectives of the Course Unit: In addition to theoretical courses on oral microbiology, bacteriology, mycology, virology and immunology, students gain knowledge about systemic diseases caused by pathogens and use their knowledge of the treatment of oral microbiological diseases while providing health services.
Contents of the Course Unit: Infections caused by microorganisms related to dentistry, oral microflora, microbiology of dental plaque and tooth decay, microbiology of endodontic diseases, microbiology of periodontal diseases, relationship of oral diseases with other systemic diseases, use of antibiotics in dentistry.

KEY LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT (On successful completion of this course unit, students/learners will or will be able to)

(Students demonstrate the knowledge, skills and/or competencies specified below upon successful completion of this course.) Classifies and understands microorganisms seen in oral diseases. Learns the colonization and disease-causing mechanisms of microorganisms responsible for periodontal diseases, caries, plaque and oral diseases, and learns their connections and interactions with other systemic diseases. Relates the treatments of diseases caused by these factors to medical information. Explains the antimicrobial agents used in these diseases, cleaning, disinfection and sterilization principles. Explains the microbiological methods used in the diagnosis of these diseases.
