OBJECTIVES AND CONTENTS

Objectives of the Course Unit: To increase students’ critical awareness of approaches that focus on writing as a process.  using a step-by-step approach and different practice types.  Integrating instruction in an essay organization along with the writing process leads students to produce the well-organized paragraphs that are essential to academic writing in English.
Contents of the Course Unit:  Interactive tasks throughout the discussions that engage students in the learning process  Students will learn how to organize different paragraph types, including narrative, process, cause/effect and comparison /contrast paragraphs.  Introducing the basic concepts of essay writing.

The course outline (week by week, for more information see the course web site)  Active participation in classroom discussions is necessary. Participants are required to prepare handouts and power point presentation is optional. The presenters are supposed to read the assigned resources and prepare the summaries.

1 Topic: Introduction to Academic Writing – Writing a Paragraph Content: Academic paragraphs; topic sentences; supporting details; unity and coherence (pp. 1–10) Homework: Prepare “Introducing Yourself” paragraph – follow the page format. -
2 Topic: Elements of a Good Paragraph Content: Structure of paragraphs; topic sentence, supporting sentences, concluding sentence. Activity: Group work on identifying paragraph unity and cohesion. -
3 Topic: Descriptive and Narrative Paragraphs Content: Using descriptive language; sequencing events. Write one descriptive and one narrative paragraph. -
4 Process Paragraphs Content: Explaining steps, transitions of time and sequence. Class Task: Write a process paragraph collaboratively. -
5 Topic: Cause and Effect Paragraphs Content: Signal words, structure, examples. Activity: Analyzing sample texts. -
6 Topic: Comparison and Contrast Paragraphs Content: Point-by-point and block methods. Homework: Write a short comparison/contrast essay draft. -
7 Topic: Opinion Paragraphs and Argument Development Content: Expressing viewpoints; supporting arguments with reasons and examples. Activity: In-class debate and peer feedback. -

9 Topic: From Paragraph to Essay Content: Essay structure (introduction, body, conclusion). Homework: Outline of first essay. -
