OBJECTIVES AND CONTENTS

Objectives of the Course Unit: The objective of this course is introducing students the concept of space through its various multidisciplinary and historical transformation process. The course aims to introduce the complex relationship between physical and mental space in order to clarify the design and representation mechanisms in architecture.
Contents of the Course Unit: The philosophical conception of space from Antiquity until Modernity and its instrumentalization in the discipline of architecture will be presented in general terms. Starting with the etymology and everyday usage of the term, the distinction between volumetric and aesthetic theories in the modern conception of space will be discussed.

To gain basic information about the etymology and epistemology of the concept of space.
To be aware of the basic discussions about the transformation of the concept of space within the discipline of architecture and its instrumentalization by modernist architecture.
Ability to think conceptually on space.
Matching different conceptions of space with social structures and architectural products.
Analyzing and comparing architectural products through the concept of space.
