Objectives and Contents

Objectives: The objective of this course is introducing students the concept of space through its various multidisciplinary and historical transformation process. The course aims to introduce the complex relationship between physical and mental space in order to clarify the design and representation mechanisms in architecture.
Content: The philosophical conception of space from Antiquity until Modernity and its instrumentalization in the discipline of architecture will be presented in general terms. Starting with the etymology and everyday usage of the term, the distinction between volumetric and aesthetic theories in the modern conception of space will be discussed.
