Objectives and Contents

Objectives: The aim of this course is to teach the fundamental concepts of sterilization and disinfection, the methods used to control microorganisms, and the principles related to the correct, safe, and effective application of these methods; and to provide students with the ability to evaluate sterilization processes in healthcare and forensic practice settings using a scientific, systematic, and safety-oriented approach.
Content: This course covers the fundamental concepts of sterilization and disinfection, general principles of microbial control, physical sterilization methods (heat, moist heat, dry heat, filtration, and radiation), as well as sterilization processes and application principles. Chemical sterilization methods, the concept and levels of disinfection, and the mechanisms of action of disinfectants are examined. In addition, the structure and functioning of Central Sterile Supply Departments (CSSD) and the proper use of personal protective equipment and safe working principles are addressed, providing a comprehensive perspective on sterilization and disinfection practices.
