Objectives and Contents

Objectives: Learning the analysis and design of digital communication systems
Content: Fourier transform and amplitude spectrum of digital signals. Digital transmission of analog signals, sampling theorem. Pulse amplitude, width and position modulations (PAM,PWM,PPM). Pulse code modulation (PCM). Delta modulation (DM). Adaptive DM, adaptive PCM, differential PCM. Time division multiplexing (TDM). PCM-TDM multiplex systems: PDH and SDH hierarchies. Signaling formats (line codes) pulse shaping and intersymbol interference (ISI). Digital carrier modulation systems: amplitude, frequency, phase and quadrature phase shift keying (ASK,FSK,PSK,QPSK). Noise performance, signal / noise ratio and bit error probability (SNR, BER) in digital communication systems. Introduction to information and coding theory.
