OBJECTIVES AND CONTENTS

Objectives of the Course Unit: This course aims to provide the knowledge and attitudes necessary to explain typical language development processes, identify the fundamental clinical characteristics of language disorders observed in childhood, and differentiate between typical and atypical language development.
Contents of the Course Unit: Definitions of communication, language, and speech concepts; typical language development and theories of language acquisition; childhood language disorders (developmental language disorder, autism spectrum disorder, language disorders associated with hearing loss and genetic syndromes); phonological development; morphological development; syntactic development; semantic and pragmatic development; characteristics of delayed language and speech; and early literacy skills.

Defines the relationship between communication, language, and speech.
Understands the balance between language acquisition theories and childhood language disorders.
Explains the stages of language and speech development in typical development.

Differentiates language disorders and language characteristics observed in different populations.
