OBJECTIVES AND CONTENTS

Objectives of the Course Unit: The aim of this course is to explain alternative and renewable energy sources and their working principles to the student.
Contents of the Course Unit: Introducing Renewable Energy: Energy Use Today, Fossil Fuels and Climate Change, Renewable Energy Sources, Renewable Energy for a Sustainable Future. Energy Economics Project: Capital Investment, Other Costs, Internal Rate of Return, Payback, Present Value Calculation, Inflation, Discounted Cash Flow. Solar Energy: Availability and Nature of Solar Energy, Active Heating with Solar Energy, Passive Heating with Solar Energy, Solar Thermal Engines and Electricity Generation. Hydroelectricity: A Brief History of Water Power, Types of Hydroelectric Power Plants, Small-Scale Hydroelectricity, Environmental Assessment.

Learn the basic classifications of energy
To raise awareness about the importance of alternative and renewable energy sources
Awareness that alternative and renewable energy sources are a constantly evolving discipline
To have knowledge about the environmental impacts of alternative and renewable energy systems
Learn the basic techniques of hydroelectric energy
Gain the ability to identify, formulate and solve problems involving Renewable Energy issues.
