The aim of this course is to enable students to develop effective listening, analysis, note-taking, and memory skills in different communicative settings and to accurately, fluently, and appropriately reproduce the speaker’s message in the target language in line with its communicative purpose. The course also aims to help students develop note-taking, oral presentation, and coping strategies specific to consecutive interpreting; understand the principles of professional ethics, impartiality, confidentiality, and responsibility; and perform basic and intermediate-level consecutive interpreting tasks in various settings. |

This course covers the fundamental concepts, cognitive processes, note-taking techniques, and professional practice areas of consecutive interpreting. The course develops students’ skills in active listening, speech and discourse analysis, short-term and working memory, segmentation into units of meaning, summarizing, reformulation, deverbalization, and reconstructing the message in the target language. Students develop a personal consecutive interpreting note-taking system based on keywords, abbreviations, symbols, vertical layout, and logical connections. Practical components of the course include the transfer of numbers, dates, proper names, abbreviations, and specialized terminology; consecutive interpreting of short- and medium-length speeches from English into Turkish and from Turkish into English; pre-assignment preparation; terminology research; target-language delivery; and voice and body language practice. The course also addresses confidentiality, accuracy, impartiality, and the professional boundaries of the interpreter’s role. |
