Objectives and Contents

Objectives: The objective of this course is to introduce the main issues in the theory and practice of discrete-time control systems. Students, after taking the course, are expected to have an understanding of the core concepts related to discrete-time PID controllers, pole placement and observer design for discrete-time systems.
Content: Introduction to discrete-time control systems, sample and hold, analog/digital and digital/analog convertors. Discrete transfer and state-space models of continuous systems. The Z-Transform. Z-plane analysis of discrete-time control systems. Descriptions of behaviour criteria on digital control systems. Stability. Analysis and design based on root locus method; Digital realization of controllers designed in s domain. Analysis and design based on frequency-response method. Analysis and design in state-space.
