OBJECTIVES AND CONTENTS

Objectives of the Course Unit: The aim of this course is to provide students with an understanding of the concepts of city and urban space within their historical, social, and spatial contexts; to offer a theoretical foundation for examining the phenomenon of urban identity with its various components; and to introduce the multidimensional structure of sustainability thinking, thereby developing the ability to evaluate the concept of cultural sustainability within the context of urban identity.
Contents of the Course Unit: This theoretical course begins by examining the historical development of the concept of the city and the formation of urban space. Students discuss how we perceive cities and how this perception relates to urban identity. The concept of urban identity, its components, and its relationship with urban memory are then explored within a theoretical framework. The effects of urban transformation processes on identity are questioned, and the importance of preserving identity is emphasized. In the second part of the course, the concept of sustainability is addressed in its environmental, economic, and social dimensions. Within this general framework, the topic of cultural sustainability is introduced, and the relationship between cultural values and urban identity is discussed. Throughout the course, critical readings and comparisons are made using different city examples.
