OBJECTIVES AND CONTENTS

Objectives of the Course Unit: It’s aimed to gain knowledge, skills, and attitudes regarding the importance of maternal and child nutrition, the physiological changes and nutritional requirements during pregnancy and lactation, infant nutrition in the 0–1 year period (breast milk, complementary feeding, and infant formulas), age-specific energy and nutrient requirements from preschool through school age and adolescence and the basic approaches to nutrition planning, and the identification of common nutrition-related problems in the mother–child period and the development of solution recommendations.
Contents of the Course Unit: The importance of maternal and child nutrition worldwide and in Türkiye, physiological changes and energy and nutrient requirements during pregnancy and lactation, nutrition planning in pregnancy and lactation, the importance of breast milk and breastfeeding principles within infant nutrition (0–1 year), transition to complementary feeding, infant formulas and nutrition planning, growth and developmental characteristics of the preschool, school-age, and adolescent periods, energy and nutrient requirements in these periods and developing a nutrition plan, common nutrition-related problems and related assessment, monitoring, and solution recommendations, case examples.

Shares recommendations on nutrition programs and practices for pregnant/breastfeeding women, children, and adolescents in Türkiye and the world.
Explains the importance of energy, macro- and micronutrients in maternal and child nutrition, and identifies their dietary sources.
Outlines nutritional recommendations for the pregnancy and breastfeeding period.
Prepares an appropriate nutrition plan by computing nutrient requirements during pregnancy and breastfeeding period.
Compares the characteristics and areas of use of infant formulas.
Explains nutritional principles for children in different age groups.
Prepares an appropriate nutrition plan by computing nutrient requirements for children in different age groups.
Outlines solution proposals for nutritional issues in children in different age groups.
Explains nutritional problems in children according to their periods.
Responds to the relationship between pregnancy and nutrition according to the periods.
