OBJECTIVES AND CONTENTS

Objectives of the Course Unit: The course has two main objectives: Firstly, the student will gain the ability to write in Arabic alphabet and secondly, to read printed texts with intensive Turkish vocabulary. For this, it is aimed that the student will recognize the letters and characters in the Ottoman Turkish Alphabet, distinguish the Arabic, Persian and Turkish letters from these letters, and comprehend the spelling rules specific to Turkish elements.
Contents of the Course Unit: In this course, the emergence and development of the Arabic alphabet is briefly discussed. The history of the use of the Arabic alphabet by the Turks is covered. The letters in the Arabic alphabet are dealt with one by one with their spelling and pronunciation. Usages specific to Turkish and exceptional cases are evaluated separately. Writing exercises are done in Arabic letters. Printed texts whose vocabulary is mainly composed of Turkish words are read and analyzed.

Defines the alphabet and explains the development of the alphabet.
Remembers the origin of the Arabic alphabet and the history of its use by the Turks.
Recognizes the letters and their characters in the Ottoman Turkish Alphabet: spelling at the beginning, middle and end, joining and uniting letters.
Distinguishes the letters specific to Arabic, Persian and Turkish in the Ottoman alphabet.
Examines the spelling of vowels in Ottoman Turkish.
Applies the spelling of the person and sign pronouns and their case suffixes on texts.
Discusses the suitability of the Arabic alphabet to the Turkish sound system.
Relates the texts written in contemporary alphabet (Latin) with the Ottoman Turkish alphabet by reading the printed texts.
Formulate short noun sentences by learning the spelling of declarations.
