OBJECTIVES AND CONTENTS

Objectives of the Course Unit: This course aims to provide students with fundamental knowledge and general practical skills in basic chemistry concepts; molecular structures and formulas; the periodic table; chemical reactions; preparation of solutions and concentration calculations; and the concepts of acids and bases and pH.
Contents of the Course Unit: This course covers fundamental chemistry concepts; the structure of matter and the atom; molecular structures and formulas; the periodic table; chemical bonding; chemical reactions and balancing equations; solutions (solute–solvent, concentration); principles of solution preparation and dilution; the concepts of acids and bases and pH; as well as calculations involving the mole, molarity, and percent concentration.

KEY LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT (On successful completion of this course unit, students/learners will or will be able to)

Defines the fundamental concepts and principles of chemistry.
Explains laboratory safety rules and the basic equipment used in the laboratory.
Correctly applies measurement, unit systems, and unit conversions.
Classifies the physical and chemical properties of matter.
Explains atomic structure, atomic theories, and the periodic table with their basic characteristics.
Classifies chemical compounds and chemical reactions according to their types.
Balances chemical equations.
Defines the concepts of solution, solvent, and solute.
Calculates solution preparation and dilution procedures based on different concentration types (percent concentration, molarity, normality, etc.).
Analyzes the acidic and basic properties of solutions using the concept of pH.
