OBJECTIVES AND CONTENTS

Objectives of the Course Unit: The aim of this course is to enable students to comprehend the normal physiological functioning of the human body at the cellular, tissue, organ, and system levels; to explain the interactions among body systems; and to relate this knowledge to professional practices in the field of health sciences.
Contents of the Course Unit: The content of this course includes an introduction to physiology and homeostasis; cell physiology; nerve and muscle physiology; blood and the immune system; the cardiovascular system; the respiratory system; the digestive system; the renal and excretory system; the endocrine system; the reproductive system; and physiological regulatory mechanisms among body systems.

Defines the fundamental concepts of physiology and the mechanisms of homeostasis
Explains substance transport across the cell membrane and pathways of cellular communication.
Explains impulse transmission in neurons and the physiology of synapses.
Compares the contraction mechanisms of skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscle.
Explains the physiological functions of blood and the immune response.
Interprets the physiological functioning of the heart and vascular system.
Explains gas exchange in the respiratory system and the regulation of respiration.
Explains the physiology of the digestive system and the processes of nutrient absorption.
Explains the role of the kidneys in fluid–electrolyte and acid–base balance.
Relates the physiological functions of the endocrine and reproductive systems.
