OBJECTIVES AND CONTENTS

Objectives of the Course Unit: The aim of this course is to teach students the fundamental concepts of orthotic science, its purposes of use, and design principles. In addition, the course aims to develop clinical decision-making skills by providing comprehensive theoretical knowledge on orthotic management strategies applied in lower and upper extremity and spinal pathologies, as well as on wheelchairs and assistive mobility devices.
Contents of the Course Unit: Within the scope of the course, the definition of orthoses, their biomechanical classification, and the properties of materials used in fabrication are addressed. The content includes current orthotic approaches for lower extremity, spinal, and upper extremity pathologies, the mechanical effects of these devices on the human body, wheelchair technologies, and the principles of use of various mobility assistive devices.

KEY LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT (On successful completion of this course unit, students/learners will or will be able to)

Defines the concept of an orthosis.
Explains the basic areas of use of orthoses.
Provides examples according to the basic areas of use of orthoses.
Lists the purposes and goals of orthosis use.
Provides examples related to foot biomechanics and appropriate footwear selection.
Explains the duration of orthosis use, maintenance, and applicability to the patient.
Defines orthotic approaches for common pathologies encountered in the lower extremity.
Defines orthotic approaches for common pathologies encountered in the upper extremity.
Defines orthotic approaches for trunk/spinal deformities or pathologies.
