OBJECTIVES AND CONTENTS

Objectives of the Course Unit: This course is an introduction to Arabic elements in Ottoman Turkish. The aim of the course is to comprehend the structural features of Arabic and word derivation logic. Throughout the semester, it is aimed that students will improve their reading and understanding skills of Ottoman Turkish texts and increase their level of readiness for further reading.
Contents of the Course Unit: The course includes the Arabic grammatical structures used in Ottoman Turkish and the reading of printed texts written at the beginning of the 20th century and their transfer to contemporary Turkish with the transcription alphabet. In this course, numerology calculus and application areas are explained with examples. Students also learn the names of the days / months in Persian and Arabic.

KEY LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT (On successful completion of this course unit, students/learners will or will be able to)

Recognizes the spelling of the positive and negative forms of simple conjugations of verbs in Ottoman Turkish alphabet.
Distinguish the primary and excess (secondary) letters in Arabic words by making root finding studies on sample texts.
Practice by transferring short printed and open handwritten texts written in Ottoman Turkish Alphabet with translation writing system.
Demonstrates writing translated texts or plain short texts with Ottoman Turkish Alphabet.
Recall the spelling of Turkish, Arabic and Persian numbers in writing and numbers.
Know day / month names in Arabic and Persian.
Can make ebced account. (like gematria)
