OBJECTIVES AND CONTENTS

Objectives of the Course Unit: This course aims to improve aptitude for examining significant turning points at the crossroads in the Turkish political life in terms of actors, significant cases and structural change chronologically and analysing continuity and failures in the Turkish political life.
Contents of the Course Unit: Contents of the course include turning points in the Turkish political life, thematic subjects and main discussions, various durations and structures of the Turkish political life from the times in Ottoman to the present day and their effects on Turkish political life, Ottoman heritage and Western modernization, The Young Turks Revolution, transition to a multi-party political life, 1960-1980 period and military coups, rise of political Islam in 1990s, accelerating European Union process in 2000s and democracy, military, state, civil society and Kurdish related problems in this process and this type of subjects and concepts.

KEY LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT (On successful completion of this course unit, students/learners will or will be able to)

Interpret political developments in the Turkish political life within that historical period
Analyze turning points in the Turkish political life and recent developments
Distinguish the role of army and bureaucracy in the Turkish political movement and debate on it
Specify effects of democratisation and European Union processes in our political life prominently
Apply and use knowledge gained over political concept and approaches for interpretation of the Turkish political life
