OBJECTIVES AND CONTENTS

Objectives of the Course Unit: The aim is to provide students with fundamental knowledge about the operating room environment, surgical team structure, and operating room processes; and to develop their professional awareness and skills to participate in operating room practices at the level of observation and support within their authority, in accordance with patient and employee safety, asepsis-antisepsis principles, and ethical rules.
Contents of the Course Unit: This course covers an introduction to surgery and its historical development, operating room organization and team structure, communication in the operating room, stress and motivation, surgical stages and patient preparation, patient safety, infection control and medical waste management, surgical handwashing techniques, wearing sterile gloves and surgical gowns, identification of surgical instruments, operating table preparation and instrument care, packaging and sterility processes of medical devices, support for interventional procedures (Foley catheter, nasogastric tube) in the perioperative period, introduction to suture materials and basic knotting techniques, management of pathology specimens, and basic information on laparoscopic and robotic surgery.

It explains the basic concepts of surgery, its historical development, and the types of surgery.
It distinguishes between the pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative periods in accordance with patient safety principles.
This document describes infection control, asepsis-antisepsis, and medical waste management practices in the operating room.
The surgeon demonstrates surgical handwashing techniques and the steps involved in putting on sterile gloves and a surgical gown.
The student recognizes and relates the basic surgical instruments used in the operating room and the processes of preparing the operating table.
It describes the processes involved in packaging medical devices, opening sterile packages, and maintaining the chain of sterility.
Provides support, within the scope of his/her authority, for commonly used interventional procedures (Foley catheter, nasogastric tube) during the perioperative period.
It identifies suture materials and basic knotting techniques used in surgery and demonstrates them in a simulation environment.
This describes the process for collecting, labeling, and transferring pathology samples from a patient.
It describes the fundamental approaches to laparoscopic and robotic surgery and their impact on operating room processes.
